Well, April’s Put Your Electronics to Bed Early Challenge is finally over.
I didn’t die. Did you?
Before, I was in the habit of staring at my phone or laptop until nearly midnight. Anything to avoid my own thoughts.
Throughout April, I, usually tried to put my phone/laptop away at 8:30 PM. You wouldn’t believe how much I dreaded this every damn night. Half of the time, I dutifully put my gadgets away and read a book, tidied the house, or made preparations for the next day. Some nights I dawdled, and some nights I looked over my partner’s shoulder and watched silly animal videos with him.
While I only earned a B- or C+ in this challenge, my efforts weren’t wasted: tearing myself away from the Internet forced me to see 1) how desperately I distract myself from life, 2) how much I use the internet to procrastinate unpleasant tasks, AND 3) how cozy a quiet evening puttering around the apartment can be.
In the future, I’ll keep trying to put my electronics to bed early. I can’t speak for you, but it did me a lot of good.
If you tried this challenge, what did you learn? What went well, and what threw you for a loop? Please tell your stories in the comments below.
