When I was growing up my family owned a ratty old paperback called The Name Game. I think it was a different edition of the book seen at left.
My parents had referred to The Name Game before naming all of their children and carefully underlined their favorite names in red ink. I studied that book for years, daydreaming about the kind of people who might answer to those elegant, exotic names.
As an adult, I asked my mother if she remembered any runner-up names for me. She immediately answered “Jemima, Eleanor, or Angelica.”
“As in Daniel Boone’s daughter. It’s a pretty name.”
Saved by the grace of…. Dad, most likely. Someone out there can rock the name Jemima and make it awesome. Not me.
What did your parents consider naming you?
