World, today marks the end of my official Month o’ Vegan Eating. During the month of September, no meat, dairy, or eggs passed my lips… to my knowledge. I did lots of squinting at ingredient labels, just to be safe.
Truthfully, my month of eating like a vegan was easier than feared. I cooked more than usual (good news) and tried a number of new recipes. When braving restaurants around town, I found several vegan menu options— not just salads, either. Dreamed several times accidentally eating eggs or dairy and regretting it, which amuses me greatly— I don’t recall ever dreaming about food before, let alone dietary restrictions. Of all things.
Not everyone had such an easy time. My mother (who started a little late) sent me a text today that read:
“Day 27: First, I discovered the butter substitute I’ve been eating for two months has whey in it. Then a fly drowned in my coffee and I didn’t know it ’til I felt it going down my throat. Epic fail. I shall Keep Calm and Carry On.”
Personally, I’d advise her to try this instead. Poor Mom! She still gets an A for honest effort.
How did your various eating and/or ethical challenges go in September? Triumphs, varied mileage, endless fly-swallowing?
