1. I was homeschooled until 3rd grade, when I switched to public school and startled teachers with my massive brain and appalling hygiene. By the end of 5th grade, depression won and I dropped out of school. At 17, I earned a GED and started college. My education remains full o’ gaping holes.
2. Speaking of holes, I have a pierced belly button! Would you have guessed?
3. I am the only brown-haired child in my family. My brother and two sisters are redheads. Where my siblings were fun-loving extroverts, I was an outrageously self-righteous, judgmental child and teenager. Imagine Javert reincarnated as an unwashed Mormon girl: “I AM THE LAW AND THE LAW IS NOT MOCKED!” It’s a wonder I had any friends.
4. Ah yes— I was Mormon for the first 22 years of my life. I had my first serious doubts at 14, started skipping meetings at 19, then gave religion three more years of valiant effort before….
5. … accepting my atheism, which I’ve never mentioned publicly before. SURPRISE! I’m an atheist!
6. I’ve always preferred baking to cooking, for three reasons: A) baking requires a shorter list of pantry staples than cooking, B) baking is often a matter of simple ingredient assembly, and C) while I’m no longer a sugar junkie, I still love sweetness.
7. While I AM a vegetarian who won’t buy leather, I am NOT a vegan. Mr. Jaunty had I were roughly 85% vegan in New Mexico, but when we moved in with Mr. S. we adopted his lifestyle. I do feel veganism is the best lifestyle for me, ethically and health-wise, so I keep inching in that direction by seeking vegan goods and lurking at The Post Punk Kitchen Forum.
Your turn!

I much prefer cooking, since proper measurements are less important. Also, I’m far too impatient for most baking. For that reason, I’m the queen of no-bake desserts.

High five for leatherless non-vegan vegetarianism and atheism!

Katie – Baking’s rarely as precise as it looks— I play pretty fast and loose with spices and vanilla. There’s a lot to be said for no-bake desserts!
Millie – GO TEAM!

I am so with you on the baking! I’m a white-knuckled cook and I have no idea what I’m doing. But with baking I just follow the recipe, maybe add a splash of vanilla or some extra cinnamon but basically it’s just measurements and a timer. Cooking seems so much more scary.
(Of course my boyfriend is the cook in our house and he says he’s so much more intimidated by baking, so maybe it’s just personal preference?)

Kelly – I’ve been doing a lot more cooking lately, and I think what I really hate is all the WORK it takes; washing produce, chopping and dicing, sauteeing… all those dishes! Baking is more instantly gratifying, if also instantly non-nutritious.
My boyfriend cooks, too! We chose wisely, eh?
