That Tune Has Been NAMED

When last we met, I was battling a stubborn earworm.  Feeling stubborn myself, I spent eight long days humming those same four bars and racking my brain. What was that melody? Why did it feel so familiar?

Eventually, I broke down and called Jean of The Reinvention Project.

As I sang the melody to Jean, she sang along, piecing in the words. I googled the lyrics, and voila! THAT TUNE WAS NAMED.

Enough suspense; that infamous melody turned out to be “I Will Wait for You” from The Umbrellas of Cherbourg (Les Parapluies de Cherbourg, for you French-speakers).

It is a yearning, aching love theme, and I saw the film last Fall. But if Jean hadn’t known the song, would I have been stuck humming it for the next ten years?
Sing it, Johnny!

  • thanks. and Johnny Mathis’ version is WAY better than the Andy Williams I found. Now here is my conundrum – heard Smokey Robinson singing ‘second that emotion’ on AOL recently and that is in my brain and I never even liked that song!
So, an old junior high school teacher told us the way to end this in our heads is to sing “amen” and I have relied on Mr. McGraw’s method all these years.

Oooh, I love “The Umbrellas of Cherbourg!” Although if they weren’t all dressed in full sixties regalia, I doubt I’d like it so much. Say, for instance, if it starred Lindsay Lohan, it would be crap.

  • jean – Yeesh, I don’t care for “I Second That Emotion” either. The joke wears thin. Hey, Mr. McGraw knew his stuff! I’ll try the “amen” cadence next time.

Ming – Presentation is everything. That umbrella shop had some mighty loud wallpaper… their little tea room nearly blinded me.
